Share on Facebook Share on TwitterBig changes are happening due to these protests. Historical statues are being torn down at a ridiculous rate, regardless of who they depict, there is much property damage throughout the country caused by these “peaceful protests.” If that were not enough many people have been hurt and some have even been killed. So to add to this chaotic movement the state of Rhode Island is changing its name to… Rhode Island.
“…Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the “first steps” to change the state’s full name: “The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.”
The “plantations” part of the name has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
The order, Executive Order 20-48, will change the name to just ‘Rhode Island’ in official communications from the governor’s office – including future executive orders, citations and stationery letterheads. It also calls on all state executive agencies to remove the “plantations” reference from their websites.
The order does not change the state’s official name permanently — that will require voters to amend the Rhode Island Constitution, the order states.
The bill was introduced by Rhode Island’s sole black senator, Harold Metts.”
“The word “plantation” has a connotation associated with slavery leading up to the Civil War. Plantations in the Deep South owned by wealthy white landowners often tasked enslaved black Americans to do the fieldwork, 60% of whom picked cotton, according to the Understanding Slavery Initiative.”
“A 2010 vote on the same issue came back overwhelmingly against changing the name, with 78% of voters opting to retain the Providence Plantations portion, according to The Providence Journal.”
It’s interesting how they are suddenly changing it now after the majority didn’t seem to care a few years back. But really did anyone know that was their official name? No one I have ever met from Rhode Island has ever spouted out that mouthful, and I doubt even they knew that was their official state name.
