The Biden administration’s inability to effectively manage international crises has once again come to the fore, as U.S. Marines were hastily deployed to Haiti under the veil of night. The move was necessitated by the escalating violence and chaos in Port-au-Prince, now resembling a war zone due to the activities of heavily armed gangs. This operation, ordered by the State Department, not only paints a grim picture of the situation in Haiti but also highlights the reactive approach of Democratic leadership towards foreign policy.

Despite President Biden personally directing this mission – a rare admission that does little to alleviate concerns over his handling of global crises.
The backdrop for this emergency airlift is a city overrun by gang violence, with these criminals demanding Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation and controlling more than 80% of Port-au-Prince. Their audacity has escalated to coordinated attacks on government institutions and key infrastructure including airports – halting international flights into Haiti.

In response, Haiti extended its state-of-emergency and curfew while deploying its nascent army alongside police forces. However, these measures proved insufficient against the onslaught from gangs despite support from U.S. ammunition supplies.
Despite these challenges, Biden’s preference for minimal engagement is evident. He previously “ruled out sending U.S. troops” directly into Haiti’s fray. Instead, he endorsed an international support mission led by Kenya greenlit by the United Nations – a move that showcases his reliance on others instead of demonstrating decisive American leadership.
Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols expressed his concern over funding delays, stating that “every day matters” for Haitians’ welfare. Yet, this statement seems ironic given his administration’s sluggishness in addressing such urgent issues head-on.

The Southern Command insists that despite these evacuations, their focus remains on supporting the Haitian people through various means including expediting security missions and advocating for peaceful power transitions through elections. However, without substantial action or funding, these words ring hollow as Haiti descends further into chaos under Democratic watch.
