The narrative surrounding the recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a key political leader of Hamas and the mastermind behind the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, is indeed intriguing.
What raises eyebrows is that he was not in his usual stronghold of Gaza Strip, but in Tehran, where he was an esteemed guest of Iran. It’s ironic that he met his end while celebrating the inauguration of Iran’s new president. This event serves as a stark reminder of how international politics often undermines global security.
According to The Associated Press, Ismail Haniyeh was killed after attending the inauguration of new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian.
Under scrutiny here isn’t just the fact that a high-ranking member of Hamas was killed on foreign soil, but also the alarming reality that such individuals are welcomed guests in countries like Iran. These nations have long histories of supporting and harboring terrorists while feigning innocence on global platforms.
While it’s true that Israel continues to defend itself against these extremist elements, one can’t help but question why prominent terror group leaders were present at Iran’s presidential ceremony? And more importantly, why does the media continue to paint Israel – a state defending its sovereignty – as a warmonger, while ignoring the role of Iran, a known sponsor of terrorism?
Furthermore, the lack of attention from President Biden’s administration towards the escalating threats posed by Iran is concerning. Their pursuit to re-enter the nuclear pact with Tehran and their muted response to proxy attacks on Israel are clear indications of their flawed foreign policy.
This November, voters need to remember that under former President Trump’s administration, such a scenario would have been handled differently. It’s time we scrutinize not just our enemies but also those at home who enable them.
