An article by the Illinois Policy Institute revealed that Stacey Davis Gates, the head of the Chicago Educators’ Union, has amassed $5,579 in unpaid utility bills despite earning an annual salary of $289,000.
The Gateway Pundit reported that the institute found, “In July 2022, the Chicago City Council passed a law preventing water shut-off for non-payment. It raises the question of whether Davis Gates, with an annual income exceeding $289,000, is taking advantage of an ordinance designed to help low-income residents.”

The institute highlighted, “It underscores CTU members’ concerns about Davis Gates and other union leaders’ failure to properly manage union funds or provide mandated reports to members. When a member questioned the union’s failure to share audits with members for at least four years, Davis Gates dismissed the member’s concern as a racist ‘dog whistle.'”
The Gateway Pundit comically criticized Davis Gates for her “latest episode of ‘Rules for thee but not for me.'” The publication pointed out, “According to a Chicago Sun-Times analysis, Davis Gates’ debt is part of over $6.4 billion in uncollected fees, fines, and debts since 1990. City Comptroller Chasse Rehwinkel stated that efforts are being made to collect debts less than five years old owed by those with the means to pay but are avoiding responsibility.”
