Mexico’s Azteca Shamelessly Caught in Bribery Scandal with US Congressman Cuellar

In a shocking revelation, Democrat Henry Cuellar of Texas and his wife have been implicated in a scandal involving Mexico’s Banco Azteca, according to court documents. The executive of the bank allegedly arranged payments to the couple in return for their influence in Washington. This is yet another example of Democrats engaging in questionable activities, casting a shadow on their credibility.

“U.S. attorneys accuse Cuellar of acting on behalf of the Mexican bank to loosen U.S. rules regarding the shipments of U.S. currency to banks in the U.S. as well seeking to block “regulations detrimental to the payday lending industry.” The indictment unsealed last week in U.S. District Court accuses Cuellar of pressuring U.S. officials on money-laundering enforcement and seeking to change U.S. money-laundering laws.”

The indictment did not directly name Banco Azteca but provided enough details that point towards its involvement, including an alleged payment of $236,390 made to the Cuellars. The bank falls under the business empire of Ricardo Salinas Pliego, Mexico’s third-richest person.

Cuellar has predictably denied these allegations while Banco Azteca maintains that its operations adhere to international compliance standards. However, it’s worth noting that neither Banco Azteca nor any of its executives or employees were charged under this indictment.

“The indictment details multiple email and text communications between Cuellar and Nino de Rivera, reporting on the progress of the Democrat’s efforts with officials and lawmakers to influence money laundering and payday lender regulation. For example, over several months in 2016, Cuellar allegedly pressured a high-level U.S. finance official and took credit for influencing policy on bank supervision.”

The indictment further alleges that the Cuellars accepted bribes from a government-owned oil and gas company in Azerbaijan. Despite these damning allegations, Cuellar insists on his and his wife’s innocence. This scandal underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability within our political system, particularly among those who are supposed to represent us.
