On Thursday, several pro-life groups criticized former President Donald Trump for not supporting a federal abortion ban. Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, stated that the legality of abortion should be decided at the state level.
Founder and executive director of Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU), Terrisa Bukovinac, stated that any candidate who does not openly support a federal ban to end abortion has not gained the support of the pro-life movement. Bukovinac further added that Trump and other Republicans who do not take a firm stance against abortion are unsuitable to lead and that the unborn must not be neglected by both political parties.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America released a statement condemning Trump’s comments and vowed to oppose any presidential candidate who does not support at least a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact further protections.
Kristen Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action, also expressed her agreement with SBA Pro-Life’s statement, stating that any federal candidate running for office must support a federal heartbeat abortion protection act at a minimum to earn their votes. The Pro-Life Generation would not support any candidate for President who does not consider abortion a federal, state, and local issue.
“The Pro-Life Generation will not support any candidate for President who doesn’t agree that abortion is a federal, state and local issue,” Hawkins wrote. “To be clear, any federal candidate running for office must support at MINIMUM a federal heartbeat abortion protection act to earn our votes.”
“It was the ‘abortion issue,’ poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or Life of the Mother, that lost large numbers of Voters,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time.
